Propulsion engineering is a modern aerospace innovation, enabling faster, more efficient, and more powerful flight. Whether it’s jet engines that drive commercial aviation or rocket propulsion systems that push the boundaries of space exploration.

Jet propulsion systems, primarily used in aviation, rely on the principles of air compression, combustion, and high-speed exhaust to generate thrust. These range from turbofan engines that power commercial aircraft to turbojet and ramjet engines used in military and high-speed applications. Jet engine development focuses on increasing fuel efficiency, reducing emissions, and enhancing overall performance.

On the other hand, rocket propulsion operates on entirely different principles. Rockets do not rely on atmospheric oxygen and instead carry their own oxidizers, making them essential for space travel. Rocket engines can be classified into liquid propulsion systems, which allow precise control and throttling, and solid propulsion systems, which are simpler but less flexible once ignited. Recent advances in hybrid rocket propulsion aim to combine the benefits of both.

The UK plays a significant role in propulsion engineering, with companies like Reaction Engines developing hybrid propulsion systems. The aerospace sector contributes over £30 billion annually to the UK economy, with propulsion engineering remaining a key driver of innovation and job creation.

Aerospace engineers work on projects that involve extreme temperatures, speeds, and pressures, making their field one of the most challenging and rewarding in engineering. The first jet engine was developed in the UK by Sir Frank Whittle in 1937, marking the beginning of modern jet propulsion. Many aerospace engineers have a background in computer simulations and artificial intelligence, which play a growing role in designing and optimizing propulsion systems. The demand for propulsion engineers is increasing, with the UK aerospace industry employing over 128,000 people and supporting 140,000 additional jobs indirectly.

The propulsion sector is highly specialised, requiring expertise in aerodynamics, thermodynamics, fluid mechanics, and materials science. Designing efficient and powerful engines demands extreme precision—any minor flaw can lead to catastrophic failure. As a result, companies looking to recruit aerospace engineers need professionals with a meticulous approach, deep problem-solving skills, and a passion for continuous learning.

Aerospace engineers specialising in propulsion systems earn competitive salaries. Entry-level engineers can expect to earn between £30,000 and £40,000 annually, while experienced propulsion engineers typically earn between £50,000 and £80,000. Senior professionals and specialists working on advanced defence or space projects can earn well over £100,000 per year.

Where to Find Aerospace Engineers

Universities and Research Institutions: Institutions with strong aerospace engineering programs, such as Imperial College London and Cranfield University, produce highly skilled graduates in propulsion engineering.

Specialised Job Boards: Platforms focused on engineering careers, such as Engineering Employment, are excellent places to advertise a job and attract top aerospace engineers.

Industry Conferences and Professional Associations: Events like the International Conference on Aerospace Propulsion and organisations like the Royal Aeronautical Society provide excellent networking opportunities to recruit aerospace engineers.

However, finding talent in this field presents challenges. Businesses looking to Hire Engineers in this sector must adopt strategic hiring practices.

Ground stations are important facilities on Earth that communicate with satellites. They consist of antennas, receivers, and control systems that track, send, and receive data from orbiting satellites. Without ground stations, satellites would not be able to transmit useful information to Earth, such as GPS signals, weather data, or internet connectivity. Engineers in this field design and maintain antennas, signal processing systems, and tracking technologies. Companies looking to recruit engineers in this domain often advertise a job through specialised Job Board.

Key Skills Required:

RF Engineering and Antenna Design

Signal Processing and Modulation

Networking and Security

Software-Defined Radio (SDR)

Knowledge of Space Regulations (ITU, FCC, ESA, etc.)

Hiring Challenges: High demand but a limited talent pool with expertise in both hardware and software, the need for security clearances for defence-related projects, and experience with proprietary communication protocols is often required.

Average Salary:

USA: $100,000 – $150,000

UK: £60,000 – £90,000

EU: €70,000 – €110,000

The payload is the main functional component of a satellite. It determines what a satellite does—whether it’s used for communication, Earth observation, scientific research, or military surveillance. For example, a communication satellite’s payload includes transponders that relay data signals between Earth and space, while an imaging satellite’s payload consists of high-resolution cameras and sensors. Engineers in this role develop high-frequency transponders, optical sensors, and data transmission systems.

Key Skills Required:

Microwave and RF Engineering

Digital and Analog Circuit Design

Embedded Systems and FPGA Programming

Thermal and Structural Analysis

Knowledge of satellite standards (MIL-STD, ECSS, DO-254)

Hiring Challenges: Specialised expertise in space-grade components is rare, engineers must have cross-disciplinary knowledge in mechanical, electrical, and software fields, and experience with radiation-hardened electronics is essential but hard to find.

Average Salary:

USA: $110,000 – $160,000

UK: £65,000 – £100,000

EU: €75,000 – €120,000

The average hiring time for satellite engineers is 3-6 months due to skill shortages. Companies offering relocation support or remote work flexibility attract 30% more qualified applicants. Businesses that advertise a job through Job Board specializing in satellite communication engineering can reduce hiring times by up to 40%.

Companies looking to hire engineers in satellite communication must offer competitive salaries, and career growth opportunities. From basic mechanical assembly, health and safety awareness or showing people where the bathrooms are all the way up to brain surgery or precision space station repair.

In mechanical design virtual prototyping has long been taken advantage through various CAD, (Computer Aided Design) packages and Product Lifecycle Management, (PLM) systems. Engineers can design a single part, parts, system, sub system or device then add their virtual work into a larger entirely simulated product.

Augmented Reality however offers a more integrated experimental process. So rather than doing your design then submitting it into the larger simulation a Design Engineer may build their system in real time first simulating parts, configurations and other considerations to see how these adjustments effect the simulated finished product and then physically build that part in the real world, and so on through to completion.

Augmented reality is also a game changed in maintenance, rather than just a visual inspection technicians can overlay parts lifetime and maintenance data and so at a glance see what parts are likely to fail then service, replace etc as appropriate.

AR jobs in Manufacturing with expected salaries:

Training Immersive Reality AR Engineer £40,000 - £130,000

Augmented Reality Manufacturing Process Developer £50,000 – £100,000

Wearable AR Engineer £32,000 – £60,000

Android, Augmented Reality Engineer £35,000 - £55,000

Rendering Specialist £45,000 - £90,000

Transferable skills and industries,

Manufacturing Process Specialists are the most obvious cohort to cross train into AR for Manufacturing however there are other, (less obvious) places to look for transferable skills. Game Development particularly with Unity, level build and rendering Engineers all have transferable skills. Then there are Computer Vision Software Engineers or AI specialists with strong practical or mechanical knowledge. Also 3D User Interface Engineers with voice interaction, decision making, deep learning etc. Are all relevant.

Best way to attract and retain Augmented Reality talent for Manufacturing. Advertise your job on a dedicated specialist job board such as Engineering Employment.

The answer is, nothing useful because although it would be like having the engine of the Starship Enterprise you can’t just put that engine into a car / ship / aeroplane or even satellite and expect to hit warp 9!

Remember when the electron was mysterious?

‘Wave particle duality’ and the random walk of an electron and the detailed application of ohms law are complexities or electrical circuits. Quantum computers are powered by a rather magical even smaller world of quantum mechanics. This area gets very confusing because sub atomic particles can become entangled then communicate with each other instantly without interaction across to our knowledge infinite distances, this makes computing theoretically much faster and efficient on it’s own. However on top of this we also have Superposition, a third state after off / zero and on / one. It’s much weirder than that though in quantum mechanics a quantum bit can only exist in it’s superposition state until it is measured. As soon as you look at it then it will revert to a zero or one.

Put another way electricity flows through an electric circuit where as in a quantum computer all the qubits stay still and process in secret, once the chain of events have completed we look at the result and in dong do reset them all.

So Quantum algorithm development thus far has been a bit backwards, instead of applying the power of what prototype quantum computers we have. Researchers have worked to identify problems that are suitable to be solved using quantum computers then developing the quantum algorithms to do it.

Some examples of Quantum Algorithms:

Grover's algorithm, Variational quantum Eigensolver, Shor's algorithm, Quantum Fourier transform etc.

Presently the Quantum computer is limited to a narrow range of applications which are mainly academic.

The next generation of quantum algorithms are likely to be a mathematical catalogue of functions that will form the building blocks of quantum coding, (like a software library) at this point developers should be able to apply the mathematics to whatever problem they choose.

Click if you would like to post a job for Quantum Algorithm Development.

“Why do you want this job?” in Electronics is a question that could only be answered using Analogue, (or Analog) Electronics. Whereas “Are you a team player?” could be answered by a Digital signal; ‘yes’ or ‘no’.

First of all; in The Kings English the correct spelling is “analogue” however “Analog” is standard for our American cousins.

So in simple terms the distinction comes from the signal used Off or On / Yes or No / Binary are digital signals. Conversely real world signals like the voice coming out of your radio, your satellite navigation or any ‘wave’ are all analogue.

Who cares right?

Well Engineers care greatly for many reasons principally much like in Ghostbusters one must never ‘cross the streams’; confusing an analogue signal with a digital one or vice versa will break everything.

From a recruitment perspective probably the salient point is that typically an Analogue Electronic Engineer can also do Digital but the reverse is not necessarily the case.

If we take kitchen design as an analogy, (bear with me).

If you went to a kitchen reseller and asked them to design your kitchen they would use an app or software tool, which is a kin to the Digital Design process and usually works fine. You’ll get the kitchen you want as long as they are able to input your parameters into their system.

Now, if you were to require something that their ‘computer said no’ to (for the sake of this example let’s pretend you wanted a hygienic compost heap next to your sink), then they would need an Analogue [kitchen] Design Engineer to take the compost heap specification, build it from first principals, (pencil, paper and a tape measure) then incorporate that into the larger Digital [kitchen] Design.

Recruit to purpose!

So continuing the analogy if you were the above kitchen reseller and needed to hire someone with analogue kitchen design skills, (or an analogue electronic design skilled engineer in the real world) should you go for a contractor or permanent person?

The answer depends on what the company’s plans are, in this example the sensible option would be to find a contractor; they will get the job done quickly and efficiently, then should you need them again you can call on them. I say this because it is extremely unlikely that the next customer will also want the same thing, (a compost heap in their kitchen) moreover that the internal talent pool would have much interest or enthusiasm in cross training into composting science. That said if the converse were true then it would make sense to hire a good Digital Design Engineer permanently who wanted to learn the Analogue side and train them. This way the company and team retain the skills for the same future need and in the event there is a future requirement that requires a ‘blank page’ or back to first principals process it will be easier to deliver.

How to hire?

Ask your team, Engineers know Engineers. Also get them to ideally write but at least read your job advert, technical detail is a language of its own and non-technical people or the most current natural language artificial intelligence can easily miss communicate or contradict essential context.

Advertise a job v engage a recruitment consultant?

Either or both are fine, for permanent positions posting the job direct works best on the company carers page and at least one dedicated job board such as Engineering Employment who will cross post your vacancy to other job boards, LinkedIn, Indeed etc and have it indexed on Google Jobs and Google Search.

If you are looking for a contractor a Recruiter might be quicker and easier.

However the vast majority of Machine Vision systems are reading barcodes, QR codes or looking for a specific detail then taking a prescribed action. For example industrial applications such as automatic inspection and manufacturing processes to identify if a product has a defect. Perhaps the more exciting developments in Machine vision are in a self-driving cars, machine vision can enable a car "see". See; the road, detect people or objects, and make decisions to drive safely. Coupled with AI this would theoretically man we could teaching machines to recognise things and react to them like a human driver might.

We are living in an era where machines not only process data but also see and interpret the world around them. Machine Vision, or Computer Vision, is the technology that enables machines to see using advanced cameras, sensors, and algorithms. This field powers some of today most transformative innovations, including autonomous vehicles and facial recognition systems.

In autonomous vehicles, machine vision systems process millions of data points per second to detect objects, predict motion, and make real-time decisions. This means every car on the road with such systems is essentially operating as a data center on wheels. Self-driving cars use machine vision to navigate roads, recognise traffic signs. With cameras, LiDAR, and radar, these systems provide unmatched environmental awareness.

In facial recognition systems, machine vision has gone beyond simple security applications. Modern systems now offer personalised customer experiences, enabling businesses to track shopping habits or enhance VIP services. HR managers hiring for these roles are at the forefront of recruiting talent that impacts privacy and ethics.

The Talent Gap Is the Opportunity

Despite its rapid growth, the field faces a significant talent shortage. Connected devices are not just the ones you can talk to like Alexa, your car or phone. They include your vacuum cleaner, WiFi Hub, TV, doorbell, wrist device, central heating etc. In industry and the home we are putting microchips in to more and more stuff so it can sense and report data over the internet. As a result more and more we are relying on Microelectronic Engineers.

Microcontrollers, Microprocessors, Integrated Circuits (IC’s) and System on Chic (SoC)

The tiny chips inside devices are not all created equal they range from an 8-bit microcontroller which would be the ‘brain’ of a power tool or child’s talking teddy through to microprocessors that might run your TV. Integrated Circuits combine processing power and memory most computer CPU’s, (Central Processing Unit) at heart of laptops are IC’s. If you want to get even more processing, memory and other functionality like perhaps communications into an even smaller space like a modern smartphone then you need a whole System on Chip or SoC.

The microelectronics industry is worth about $1 Trillion globally.

The UK has 2% of this by revenue, expected to grow to £17 billion by 2030.

One third of the world microelectronic companies are in America. The UK has approximately 210 dedicated semiconductor companies, ARM being the largest by revenue and workforce. There are about 5,000 employed microelectronic engineers in the UK presently which is expected to increase.

Challenges to finding and acquiring Microelectronics Specialists.
The UK microelectronics sector is highly specialised and experiences a shortage of skilled professionals. Microelectronic Engineering can layer electronics, physics, and materials science knowledge to design tiny but powerful devices. One miss informed guess or the smallest mistake can cause cascading problems so great engineers are precise, careful and don’t guess. Microelectronics constantly evolves, so top engineers are inquisitive, creative and love to solve tough problems. New domains, technologies, skills and design tools or software are the things they crave. Also structure, defined lanes and a positive cross functional collaborative working environment tend to keep them happy. Along with all the usual work niceties.

Average Salaries in the UK, salaries for microelectronics specialists can vary. IC design engineers, for example, may earn between £40,000 and £70,000 annually, depending on experience and specific skill sets.

Where to Look for Microelectronics Specialists:
Universities and Research Labs Many top universities have strong programs in microelectronics.

Job Boards for that focus on engineering jobs.
